At a glance
Electrical Circuits is a 60 or 75 minute workshop for grades 4 to 9. Students learn what electricity is, describe forms of energy and how they change, then build series and parallel circuits that get more and more complex.
Can electric current flow through the human body? Why does the bedroom light stay on when you turn off the one in the living room?
Our apprentice electricians answer these questions by building series and parallel circuits that get more and more complex.
Get your students switched on! And keep their neurons lit up with the mini electric shock detector!
Learning goals (elementary)
- Understand what electricity is.
- Describe different forms of energy (mechanical, solar, chemical, hydraulic, nuclear).
- Describe how energy changes from one form to another (for example, hydraulic energy to electricity).
- Use the parts of a simple circuit (wires, power source, bulb, switch).
- Understand how series, parallel, closed and open circuits work and what they are used for.
- Read diagrams that use symbols.
- Think through mistakes to find their cause.
