How to choose an activity
The catalogue brings together 87 science activities in French: 53 workshops, 30 classroom projects and 4 shows. They all take place in your school, from kindergarten to grade 12, with the materials brought by Profaqua.
Workshops
A workshop is a single visit built around one big question, usually 60 or 75 minutes long, sometimes 90. It costs from $205 per class for 60 minutes, with a minimum of two classes per day. One student becomes the lab-coated science assistant, the class makes a hypothesis, then everyone gets hands-on.
Classroom projects
A project runs over two to four visits around one challenge: building a bridge, hatching ducklings, tracking the weather or programming a robot. It costs from $400 per class for two 60-minute visits.
Shows
The 4 shows last 60 minutes and work for one class or the whole school, with no minimum or maximum number of students: from $800 for Magic or Science? and from $1,000 for the science shows, such as Halloween: The Science of Fear or The Great Inventor Elf.
Five subjects
- Physics (27 activities): static electricity, electrical circuits, electromagnetism, catapults, bridges and buildings, Spy School and circuit games.
- Living things (23 activities): ducklings and chicks, insects, the five senses, human anatomy, nutrition, vermicomposting, trees and flowers.
- Earth and space (19 activities): the solar system, the Moon, space exploration, fossils, dinosaurs, weather, wind, the Fraser River and natural disasters.
- Robotics (9 activities): KUBO®, Bee-Bot®, Blue-Bot®, Botley, LEGO® WeDo 2.0, SPIKE™, MINDSTORMS® EV3 and NXT, and Turing Tumble®.
- Chemistry (5 activities): dry ice, chemical reactions, pH acids and bases, mixtures and separation, electrolysis and batteries.
The four shows
- Magic or Science? (kindergarten to grade 6): children look for the science behind the magician’s tricks and learn five tricks to perform at home.
- The Great Inventor Elf (kindergarten to grade 12): the great minds whose discoveries changed the way we celebrate Christmas, as experiments on stage.
- Halloween: The Science of Fear (kindergarten to grade 12): a pirate, a haunted-house setting, dry-ice potions and a Van de Graaff generator.
- In the Footsteps of Great Inventors (kindergarten to grade 12): the discoveries that changed the world, with a student assistant at every demonstration.
Other ways to book them
Twelve workshops approach science through Indigenous perspectives, and six take place outdoors, in the schoolyard or a park near the school: two families of workshops that can fit a PassepART project, once eligibility is confirmed. The 9 robotics activities can be booked as a full program with our robots or as facilitation with your school’s robots. And 48 activities also run as after-school clubs of 6 to 12 weeks.
For every grade
26 activities suit kindergarten, 70 grades 1 to 3, 79 grades 4 to 7 and 43 grades 8 to 12. The youngest start with the five senses, dinosaurs, dry ice or floor robots; in secondary school, human anatomy, sexual health education, energy, bridges and SPIKE™ or EV3 robotics go further.
What is included, what to plan for
Profaqua brings the materials and the robots, and teachers then receive activity sheets to consolidate what students discovered. On site, most activities need access to electrical outlets, and some experiments a sink nearby or a clear space.
