See science come to life, then try it

Listen to our science segments on the Allô Maillardville podcast, watch our workshops and shows, and test five interactive experiments built around the topics of the episodes.

The lab at home

Five experiments to try while you listen

Red-cabbage pH, dry-ice fog, reaction time, sink or float, the science of air: each experiment follows the same steps as our workshops. Predict, test, then explain what happened. Listen to the episode (in French), then try it.

The red-cabbage pH lab

Red-cabbage juice changes colour with acidity. Pick a liquid, predict whether it is acidic, neutral or basic, then pour!

1 Pick a liquid

2 Predict

The result will appear here.

Explain : red cabbage contains pigments called anthocyanins. They turn red or pink with an acid, purple near neutral, then blue and green with a base. With an adult : boil red-cabbage leaves and keep the juice to test your own liquids.

Dry ice: the magic of sublimation

Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide. What happens when it warms up? Predict, then raise the temperature.

1 Predict :
−100 °C

Solid. Nothing moves… for now.

Explain : at normal pressure, dry ice goes straight from solid to gas at −78.5 °C without becoming liquid: that is sublimation. The “fog” you see is water vapour from the air condensing in the cold. Safety: never touch it with bare hands and never seal it in a closed container.

How fast is your brain?

Click the drop as soon as it turns green. Five tries, then we work out your average. Predict first: how many milliseconds?

1 Predict :

2 Test

Explain : your eyes see the change, your brain decides, then it sends a signal to your hand through your nerves. For most people, it all takes about a quarter of a second (200 to 300 ms).

    Sink or float?

Pick an object, make your prediction and watch it drop in.

    1 Pick an object

    2 Predict

Explain : an object floats when it is less dense than water, meaning it has less mass for the same amount of space.

True or false: the science of air

Each right answer inflates the balloon. Can you make it lift off?

    1. 1. Air has mass.

    2. 2. Warm air rises.

    3. 3. The air we breathe is mostly oxygen.

    4. 4. Air can push things.

    5. 5. An “empty” bottle holds nothing.
