Core French

Core French activities for BC schools

Your students are just getting started in French. That is exactly why science works: the experiment carries the meaning. Our facilitators lead visual, hands-on activities in French that every student can follow, enjoy and remember.

Why it works

When the science explains itself, French feels easy

In a Core French class, a long explanation in French can lose half the room. A hands-on experiment does the opposite. Students see a reaction happen, hold the material in their hands and recognize the key words because they are tied to something concrete.

Our facilitators speak French throughout, with simple sentences, gestures and repetition. Instructions are shown before they are said. Students answer with the words they know, and pick up new ones because they need them to win the challenge.

The result is an hour where French is not a subject but a tool, and where students leave proud of what they understood.

  • Visual demonstrations before instructions
  • Key vocabulary tied to real objects
  • A role in the experiment for every student

Formats that suit Core French classes

Short, focused workshops

A 60-minute workshop on one clear question is often the best fit for Core French. From $205 per class, minimum two classes per day.

Science shows

Highly visual and full of surprises, a show brings several Core French classes together in the gym. From $800 per show.

Robotics

Coding a robot to reach a target is understood in any language. LEGO® WeDo 2.0, SPIKE™ and more.

Funding

CPF funding for Core French schools

Eligible public schools offering Core French can receive support from the Culture in the Classroom program of Canadian Parents for French BC & Yukon: up to $1,000 per visit, plus up to $200 per visit toward travel for schools in remote areas.

Core French schools can receive one visit over a two-year period. The school submits the request; we help you plan the activity and connect with CPF. Your Parent Advisory Council may also support the project.

  • Up to $1,000 per visit, plus up to $200 for travel

Can students with very little French really follow?

Yes. Our Core French sessions rely on demonstrations, gestures, repetition and simple vocabulary tied to objects. Tell us your students’ grade and level, and we will choose a topic that suits them.

Is the activity entirely in French?

Yes. That is what makes it valuable for your students, and it is also a requirement for CPF funding. The facilitator adapts the language so that everyone can take part.

Which activity should we choose?

Highly visual topics work best: dry ice, magic or science, the five senses, magnetism or the egg drop parachute. A science show is also a great way to reach several Core French classes at once.

What does it cost?

Workshops start at $205 per class with a minimum of two classes per day, and science shows start at $800 (magic & science show). Travel fees, GST and PST are extra.

Can Core French classes book a project?

Yes. A project runs over two to four visits, from $400 per class for two 60-minute visits, and gives students time to reuse the same words from one visit to the next.

Can several Core French classes see a show together?

Yes. Science shows have no minimum or maximum number of students, so several classes, or the whole school, can attend the same 60-minute show.

Is there anything for after the visit?

Yes. After each workshop, teachers receive activity sheets to consolidate what students discovered, a simple way to reuse the new vocabulary in class.
