Francophone schools

Science in French for BC’s Francophone schools

For students who live in French at school, science should be just as rich in French. Profaqua brings fast-paced, hands-on science to Conseil scolaire francophone classrooms across the province, from kindergarten to grade 12.

Science that strengthens French, too

In a minority-language setting, every activity in French counts. Our workshops let francophone students hear and use precise scientific vocabulary in their own language: hypothesis, density, circuit, ecosystem, gravity.

Profaqua has worked in French for more than 25 years. Our founder, Éric Tremblay, has created more than 55 workshops and travels across BC every year to visit francophone schools, from the Lower Mainland to Vancouver Island and the North.

For larger events, a science show brings the whole school together, while multi-visit projects let one class dig deep into a real problem.

Funding

Three ways francophone schools fund a visit

Each program sets its own rules. Confirm eligibility before counting on the funds; we can help with the first steps.

PassepART

A $1,500 micro-grant per school per year for French-language projects with an artistic, cultural or heritage dimension. Some Indigenous, outdoor and show activities may fit. Learn more

Vice-Versa

$1,500 per school per project for French-language projects led with a non-profit partner, where students help choose and build the project. Learn more

Your APÉ

Your parents’ association can support an activity, or act as the partner organization for some grant applications. Learn more

Workshops that can fit a PassepART project

Indigenous-perspective and outdoor workshops, whose cultural or natural-heritage dimension can fit PassepART once eligibility is confirmed.

Do you work with all CSF schools?

We work with francophone schools across British Columbia. Schools outside Greater Vancouver are usually served during our regional science tours, which keeps travel costs down.

Can CSF schools use Canadian Parents for French funding?

No. CPF’s Culture in the Classroom program is for public schools offering French Immersion or Core French. Francophone schools usually look at PassepART, Vice-Versa or their APÉ instead.

Which activities could fit a PassepART project?

PassepART funds projects with an artistic, cultural or heritage dimension. Our Indigenous-perspective workshops, outdoor workshops and some science shows may fit, depending on the project. Eligibility must be confirmed with PassepART.

How can a CSF school fund an activity?

PassepART offers $1,500 per school per year for an activity with an artistic, cultural or heritage dimension; Vice-Versa offers $1,500 per school per project when students help design the project. Both applications come from an eligible non-profit, such as an eligible APÉ, which can also fund an activity from its own budget.

Are the activities linked to the BC curriculum?

Yes. Our workshops are linked to the BC curriculum, and each activity can launch a new topic or deepen one your class has already studied.

Can the whole school take part?

Yes, with a science show: shows have no minimum or maximum number of students. A Pro-D day can also combine a show and workshops in small groups, with packages from $430.
