At a glance

The Five Senses and the Sea is a 60-minute workshop for kindergarten, grade 1 and grade 4 that explores the five senses through the Salish Sea, home to Indigenous peoples, coastal communities and endangered species. Students rotate through five stations, including one with virtual reality headsets.

Discover the five senses in a new way while exploring the Salish Sea, home to Indigenous peoples, coastal communities and endangered species!

Let yourself be charmed by this one-of-a-kind, sea-themed version of our five senses workshop.

Your young scientists rotate through five stations: virtual reality (VR) headsets that bring marine life to life, seashells that let them hear the sea, a tasting of foods the Salish Sea provides (seaweed, crab, lobster, shrimp, fish…), a challenge to identify our ocean scents, and objects from the aquatic world to handle.

Dive into the adventure!

Learning goals (elementary)

  • Discover the 5 basic tastes the tongue can detect (sweet, salty, bitter, sour and umami).
  • Explain how each sense works (sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch).
  • Match smells, textures and tastes with the pictures that go with them.
  • Test the limits of the senses.
