The States of Water is a 60 or 75 minute workshop for grades 4, 5, 7 and 8. Students discover the three states of water and how it changes from one to another (sublimation, condensation, solidification, melting, evaporation), then turn liquid water into gas and back again.
The towel you dried off with after your bath last night is dry this morning. So where did the water go?
Behind that intriguing question lie the states of water (gas, liquid and solid) and how it changes from one to another (sublimation, condensation, freezing, liquefaction, melting, evaporation and boiling). We explore them together through fun little activities and an amazing experiment where your young Lavoisiers turn liquid water into gas and back again!
Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed!
Learning goals (elementary)
- Recognize water in its three states: solid (ice, snow), liquid and gas (vapour).
- Describe what to do to change water from one state to another (heat or cool it).
- Recognize that the amount of matter stays the same during a change (for example, 50 ml of water in a saucer or a glass).
- Describe how water quality affects living things.
- Describe the forms water can take (rain, snow, hail, frost, freezing rain, mist, fog, dew, clouds, vapour).
