Time and Measurement is a 60 or 75 minute workshop for grades 2 to 4, 7 and 8.
In five experiments, with a laser thermometer, a giant calculator, measuring cups, a sundial and an electronic scale, students explore units of measurement for temperature, money, volume, time and density, and the difference between the metric and imperial systems.
32 degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit? The difference is clearly measurable, and it will never be a mystery to your students again.
Together we explore units of measurement for temperature, money, volume, time and density through five fun experiments using a laser thermometer, a giant calculator, measuring cups, a sundial and an electronic scale.
The differences between the metric and imperial systems will be revealed for good!
Learning goals (elementary)
- Tell apart different notions of time (hour, day, week, month, season, history and more).
- Tell an object’s mass (amount of matter) from its weight.
- Sort solids by density.
- Tell the three states of matter apart (solid, liquid, gas) and the changes (heating and cooling) that move between them.
- Understand that volume can take many shapes.
- Use simple measuring tools (scale, spoon, graduated bottle and thermometer).
- Understand the value of money (then and now).
- Link day and night with the Earth’s rotation.
- Link the changing seasons with the Earth’s revolution and tilt.
