Life Underground is a 60 or 75 minute workshop for kindergarten to grade 5 and grade 8, offered in class or outdoors. Students explain the science of composting and discover the role of soil decomposers in making dead leaves disappear.
Have you ever noticed that most of the leaves buried under the snow are gone when spring arrives?
Our biologists figure out this phenomenon through 3 fun experiments! They become detectives to find the culprits behind this mysterious disappearance! Once identified, they observe 3 of the culprits from our compost under a magnifying glass: mites, springtails and earthworms, which they even get to handle!
Fun packed with vitamins and minerals for your students!
Learning goals (elementary)
- Explain the science of composting and recycling.
- Identify habitats and the animal populations that live there (earthworms, fungi, burrowing animals).
- Describe how soil meets the basic needs of living things.
