Dry Ice is a 60 or 75 minute workshop for kindergarten to grade 10, built around a freezing substance at −78 °C. Students distinguish the states of matter, compare carbon dioxide with water and watch sublimation in experiments such as Icelandic geysers or the witch’s potion.
Dry ice: a lovely souvenir from our trip to the planet Mars.
With this mysterious, freezing substance (−78 °C!), students take part in experiments that will make them lose their cool: the Caribou song, the queen’s dance, Icelandic geysers, orange-juice volcanoes, a slimy witch’s potion, a disgusting cauldron…
A magical workshop they will never forget!
Learning goals (elementary)
- Tell the states of matter apart (solid, liquid, gas).
- Compare the states of carbon dioxide with those of water (H2O).
- Observe dry ice sublimating.
- Use simple measuring tools (tongs, dropper, graduated bottle).
- Make hypotheses about what mixtures will do.
