At a glance
Chemical Reactions is a 60 or 75 minute workshop for kindergarten to grade 10, in four colourful experiments.
Students make denim dye and an anti-dandruff type fungicide, then use a pH indicator. They learn to tell a chemical reaction from a physical change, make hypotheses and touch on the primary colours of light and the density of liquids.
Are molecules being transformed, or is it just a change in appearance? Chemistry or physics?
Discover your talents as a chemist by making your own potions!
Through four colourful experiments, students make dye for jeans and an anti-dandruff-style fungicide, and finish by using a pH indicator.
These experiments also touch on a few physics ideas, such as the primary colours of light and the density of liquids.
You’ll see every colour of the rainbow!
Learning goals (elementary)
- Tell physical changes from chemical reactions.
- Make hypotheses about what mixtures will do.
- Use simple measuring tools (tongs, test tube, dropper, graduated bottle, spoon).
- Understand atoms and molecules, including the water molecule (H2O).
- Recognize safety symbols.
