pH: Acids and Bases is a 60 or 75 minute workshop for grades 1 to 5 and grade 7. Students discover that the properties of acids and bases come from the exchange of protons, then learn to sort the acids and bases they meet in everyday life.
In this workshop, students learn a whole new language for chemistry: the properties of acids and bases come from the exchange of H+ protons.
It is a perfect fit for young people, because the world around us is full of acidic and basic substances, some useful and some harmful. It also shows them that chemistry, and science in general, drives our daily lives without us noticing.
By the end of the experiments, they can classify the acids and bases they meet every day!
Learning goals (elementary)
- Tell physical changes from chemical ones.
- Make hypotheses about what mixtures will do.
- Use simple measuring tools.
- Understand pH.
